President’s Message

Whew! Belleville’s Bicentennial Year is nearing its conclusion and, boy,  have we been busy!
The Sister Cities bicentennial beer garden float, created by Ron Fritz and a  crew including Keith Brauer and John Roach, has participated in several  parades – winning a trophy along the way — and will be on the streets again  Nov. 28 for the Santa Parade.

We’ve just held another successful Taste of Germany dinner.  Attendance  was down a bit this year.  We’re not sure if that was because of the earlier  time, competition presented by fine weather and post-season baseball play- offs, or simply because people were still recovering from the three-day Okto- berfest two weeks earlier.

We hosted 17 visitors from Paderborn during Belleville’s biggest ever Oktoberfest event and our hard  work at the food booth paid off with substantial profits to support our youth exchange program with  Paderborn.

On Saturday, Sept. 20, our Paderborn guests including Mayor Michael Dreier and former Mayor  Heinz Paus joined Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert and Belleville Sister Cities members in dedicating a  white oak tree and marker at what is being developed as a second entrance to Bicentennial Park.  A month earlier, we joined Paderborn Sister Cities and others in co-sponsoring a drum workshop and  performance organized by Ulrich Frost of Paderborn.  He brought in the bassist and pianist from the  Chester Thompson trio as well as two internationally known drummers for a high-energy perform- ance at the Philharmonic Hall on Aug. 26.

But the year isn’t over yet.  Quickly coming up is our November general meeting at which David  Braswell will give a talk on „Belleville Then and Now.“  He must chair another meeting that night so  he’ll begin his talk at 6:00. We will elect a trustee in our business meeting, which will be held after  his talk.  Remember, dinner is at 5:30.

Beginning on Nov. 28, Belleville will have its first Christmas Market and we’ve been invited to sell  gluhwein and beer in one of the chalets that will be set up near the central square downtown.  And on Dec. 18 we’ll gather at the Roemer Topf Restaurant in Mascoutah for our annual Christmas  Stammtisch.

Then, with the Bicentennial behind us, we’ll be looking forward to celebrating our own anniversary,  the 25th, in 2015.  I’m already looking for volunteers for a committee to plan our celebration.

News from Paderborn

Dear friends in Belleville and Around!

A big hand from Paderborn to the city of Belleville and to the Bicen- tennial Committee for organizing a wonderful September event – it  was the highlight of the great anniversary of Paderborn’s sister city.  And congratulations to Belleville Sister Cities, Inc. on the big suc- cess of the Oktoberfest booth on the Public Square.

The Freundeskreis sent a group of eleven members, led by President  Heiner Sprenkamp, to Belleville.  Two other DAFK-members, Man- fred Greitemeyer and his wife Beate, stopped in Belleville for the  Oktoberfest celebration while on a private trip through U.S.  Pader- born’s new Mayor Michael Dreier and his wife Beate as well as for- mer Mayor Heinz Paus and his wife Sabine came for two and a half  day to join Belleville’s big birthday party.

All guests from Paderborn enjoyed the wonderful hospitality of  Belleville host families, and they spent unforgettable days in the 200  years young old town:  With good beers, the very tasty 200 foot Brat- wurst (and other delicious food), good music (not only by the legendary Beach Boys) and a lot of good talks with Belleville friends and visitors from around.  Warm thanks to everybody involved, to the host families, to Mayor Eckert and to the board of  BSC.

To join the Naturalization Ceremony of the State of Illinois, the official Opening Ceremony of  the weekend and the bishop’s mass was a honor for the German guests.  The Tapping of the  Golden Keg, introduced by the American and German National anthem (performed by Doris  Roach) was a very special event – not only for the gals in Dirndl and the guys Lederhosen.   DAFK-members Gertrud and John Greaves supported the BSC-friends at the Oktoberfest- booth.  Manfred Greitemeyer helped in erecting the BSC booths on Thursday evening.

The Paderborn group was proud to be part of an international music program.  The accordi- onists Gabi Sprenkamp and her sister Uta Hoischen played together with the Belleville musi- cian Mardy Eisloeffel and his friend as a quartet at the Oktoberfest-stage on West Main  Street, and a choir of German singing students of Belleville high schools and Paderborn visi- tors, conducted by Andy Gaa, performed old German folk tunes and new songs like „From  Paderborn to America“, written by Karl-Horst (“Charlie”) Meiners, and the “The Paderborn  Song.”

A few of the Paderborn guests were visiting Belleville for the first time.  They enjoyed the of- fers of Belleville friends to make short trips to St. Louis (Gateway Arch and/or a Cardinal  Baseball game) and to “Little” Paderborn in St. Clair County during this sunny weekend.

The tree dedication in the new Bicentennial Park together with the friends of Belleville Sis- ter Cities and the Mayors, the guided bus-tour with Mayor Mark Eckert to interesting points  of Belleville, and finally the breakfast at Our Lady of the Snows on the last morning have  also been big points of a great itinerary.  It was a weekend of a wonderful friendship.  All of  us had a really great time.  After returning to Germany Mayor Michael Dreier said, he hopes  to the see many friends from Belleville in Paderborn next year.

And now:  All DAFK-members wish Belleville much luck for the first (German) Christmas  market!

Bürgermeister Michael Dreier empfängt

Bürgermeister Michael Dreier bereitete den zwölf Schülerinnen und Schülern aus der Partnerstadt Belleville und ihren Betreuern am Dienstag, 15. Juli, im großen Rathaussaal einen herzlichen Empfang. Es ist der erste Empfang Dreiers als Stadtoberhaupt.
Der Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundeskreis führt seit 1990, in Kooperation mit dem Jugendamt der Stadt Paderborn, internationale Jugendbegegnungen mit der Paderborner Partnerstadt Belleville (USA) im jährlichen Wechsel durch. In diesem Jahr sind zwölf Schülerinnen und Schüler aus der Partnerstadt zu Besuch in Paderborner Gastfamilien. Begleitet werden sie von Kate Eckert, Tochter des Bürgermeisters von Belleville, und Andy Gaa, Betreuer der amerikanischen Austauschgruppe. „Ich darf euch im Namen aller Paderbornerinnen und Paderborner hier begrüßen. Ihr kommt passend zum Schützenfest und bleibt bis zum Libori-Auftakt – damit habt ihr in Paderborn einen sehr guten Zeitpunkt erwischt“, bereitete Bürgermeister Michael Dreier den Gästen am Dienstag, 15. Juli, im großen Rathaussaal einen herzlichen Empfang. Es ist der erste Empfang Dreiers als Stadtoberhaupt.

Der Bürgermeister sprach den jungen Gästen nochmals seine Glückwünsche zum 200. Gründungsjubiläum von Belleville aus, das in diesem Jahr auf beiden Seiten bereits ausgiebig gefeiert wurde. „Mein erster internationaler Besuch in diesem Jahr wird in ihrer Stadt sein“, so Dreier und betonte dabei seine Wertschätzung für internationale Begegnungen. In seinem Vortrag skizzierte er ein Portrait der Paderstadt, das den Gästen Einblick in die Vielfalt der ostwestfälischen Stadt bot. Anwesend waren auch der Geschäftsführer des Deutsch-Amerikanischen Freundeskreises Dr. Otmar Allendorf, der Vizepräsident Wolfgang Stüken und der Präsident Kurt Heiner Sprenkamp, der sich für den Empfang bedankte. An der Veranstaltung im Rathaus nahmen auch Petra Erger, Leiterin des Jugendamtes, und Oliver Boraucke, ebenfalls aus dem Jugendamt, teil. Das städtische Amt unterstützt das Austauschprogramm finanziell und stellt zudem eine fachliche Begleitung zur Verfügung.

Das Programm der amerikanischen Gäste sieht in den nächsten Tagen unter anderem eine Stadtführung, einen „Welcome-Abend“ des Freundeskreises, eine Kanutour auf der Weser, ein Tagesausflug nach Köln und die Teilnahme an den Eröffnungsfeierlichkeiten anlässlich des Liborifestes vor. Zum Abschluss ist ein dreitägiger Besuch in München inklusive Zeltdachtour im Olympiapark und ein Besuch der DenkStätte Weiße Rose geplant.

Oft strahlte über dem Kunstfestival eine warme Maisonne –
aber der Frühling in Illinois kann auch anders

Entlang der ersten Häuserblocks von vier Hauptstraßen, die in den Kreisverkehr rund um den Veterans-Brunnen in der Belleviller Stadtmitte münden, lockten lange Reihen weißer Ausstellungszelte zum Besuch. Uschi Bracker und Renate Stüken, die beiden Künstler aus dem Kreis Paderborn, zeigten ihre Ölbilder (Bracker) und Tonskulpturen (Stüken) im Zelt Nummer 88 an der West Main Street. Die beiden Künstlerinnen, die mit Unterstützung des Deutsch-Amerikanischen Freundeskreises Paderborn-Belleville (Renate Stüken ist seit mehr als 20 Jahren Mitglied) und der Stadt Paderborn bei „Art on the Square“ 2014 dabei waren, sorgten mit einem aus Israel stammenden Künstler für die internationale Note des Festivals. Eine vielfältige Kunstszene der Vereinigten Staaten prägte die Schau: 900 Künstler aus 49 Bundesstaaten der USA hatten sich bei der Festivaljury um die Teilnahme beworben. Eine Seite des Ausstellungskatalogs war den beiden aus Deutschland angereisten Künstlerinnen gewidmet.

Belleville’s Bürgermeister Mark Eckert nannte das Festival einen Höhepunkt des Jubiläumsjahres „200 Jahre Belleville“. Nicht weniger als sieben Mal sei „Art on the Square“ in den letzten sieben Jahren in einem nationalen Ranking als zweitbestes oder bestes Kunstfestival der USA bewertet worden, stellte er stolz heraus. Nicht minder erfreut zog er nach Abschluss des Festivals unter Verweis auf Schätzungen der Polizei Bilanz: „Wir hatten fast 100.000 Besucher.“ Täglich schaute Mark Eckert mindestens einmal am Zelt Nummer 88 der beiden ostwestfälischen Künstlerinnen vorbei. Er und Ausstellungschefin Patty Gregory begrüßten die beiden Gäste aus Deutschland – und fünf weitere Besucher aus Paderborn – am Morgen des letzten Ausstellungstages unter viel Applaus beim Sonntagsbrunch für die beteiligten Künstler im „Bellecourt Manor“.

Auch Larry Pearson, Präsident der DAFK-Partnerorganisation Belleville Sister Cities, hieß Uschi Bracker und Renate Stüken bei einem Besuch ihres Ausstellungszeltes in der Partnerstadt willkommen. Die Betreuung der Künstler durch ein großes Helferteam des Festivals sei „ausgesprochen gut“ und „ein großer Pluspunkt dieser Schau“ gewesen, sagte Renate Stüken. Gemeinsam mit Uschi Bracker zog sie Bilanz: „Unsere Kunst ist gut bei den Amerikanern angekommen. Wir haben viel Zuspruch und Anerkennung bekommen.“

Manche der freundlichen Besucher am Zelt Nummer 88 stellten interessierte Fragen zu den verwendeten Materialien und Techniken. Renate Stüken und Uschi Bracker griffen zwischendurch zu Ton, Stift und Pinsel, um ihre Arbeitsweise zu demonstrieren. Und nicht wenige Besucher erzählten den Künstlerinnen, wie gern sie nach und durch Deutschland reisen, oder dass ihre Vorfahren von dort stammen.

Von Regen blieb „Art on the Square“ verschont. Oft strahlte über dem Festival eine warme Maisonne. Aber der Frühling in Illinois kann auch anders: Am ersten Ausstellungsabend fegte ein heftiger und kalter Wind durch die Straßen der Partnerstadt. Die Sicherung vieler Ausstellungszelte musste durch Sandsäcke verstärkt werden. Als es im Zelt Nummer 88 gegen 21 Uhr ziemlich kühl wurde, waren hilfsbereite Freunde von Belleville Sister Cities flugs mit einem elektrischen Heizofen zur Stelle.

President’s Message

We were more than ready to welcome spring to Belleville this year,  and we’ll soon welcome the first of our Paderborn visitors this year  too.

Our general membership meeting is coming up on May 15.  And,  right after that is Art on the Square.  Again this year Paderborn art- ists will be represented.  Renate Stueken and Uschi Bracker will exhibit some of their work.

Twelve Belleville high school students are preparing for their trip to  Paderborn this summer – a trip that we understand will also include  an excursion to Bavaria – and a group of 12 from Paderborn will arrive in September to celebrate Oktoberfest with us.

We may also enjoy a visit including a performance by a 49-member youth symphonic band  from Heide, Germany, in mid-July.  If they come, they’ll be co-sponsored by the Belleville  Philharmonic.  Jerry Reilmann is representing Sister Cities as we explore this possibility.  We may be looking for accommodations for some of the youths during a two-night stay.  We  should have news about this at the Membership Appreciation Dinner at St. Luke’s Parish  Hall on June 19.

In the meantime, Ron Fritz has led a crew that prepared a beer garden float for the April 25  Bicentennial Parade.  If you saw the parade, perhaps a costumed Sister Cities member lifted  a stein to you as the float made its way down Main Street with all the other bicentennial  floats.

The Paderborn group that’s coming in September will drive down from Chicago on the day  that we’ll be setting up our booths for Oktoberfest and will be here for all three days of what  promises to be an event to remember.  They’ll be departing the following Monday to catch a  flight back to Paderborn that leaves that afternoon.  While they’re here, we’ll be joining them  in dedicating a white oak tree and plaque at Bicentennial Park.
Our Taste of Germany plans are proceeding well too.  We expect the earlier start time – 3  p.m. on Oct. 5 – will add to the appeal of this event for those who have farther to travel to it.  I’ve already received positive responses from some.

Our bicentennial year is off to a good start and there is much left in it for us to look forward  to.

News from Paderborn

Dear Friends in Belleville and Around,

The activities for Belleville’s Bicentennial reached one of its peaks  with the wonderful parade on April 25th.  We have seen great pic- tures of the event, also the picture of BSC’s float recognizing Belle- ville’s German heritage and the connection between our two cities.  Congratulations on this wonderful achievement!  Many thanks to  those who have been responsible for the layout and the production of  the float!

We have heard the video with the greetings of Paderborn’s Mayor  Heinz Paus and the message from DAFK President Heiner and Vice- President Wolfgang were well received at the Gala of March 8th.

The Paderborn artists Renate Stueken and Uschi Bracker will pre- sent their works of art at Art on the Square in May.  Both artists  have their focus on “people”:  Renate will present sculptures of clay,  Uschi will show paintings.  Both artists are grateful for the support  of the project by the City of Paderborn as well as by Robert “Chick”  Fritz, Inc. and their German beer partner Warsteiner, DAFK and  BSC.  Renate and Uschi are glad that their husbands Wolfgang and Joerg will lend a helping  hand during the exhibition.  All of them will be hosted by Bob and Ruth Fritz.

From July 12th thru August 1st DAFK is looking forward to the return visit of 12 Belleville  youths who had hosted a Paderborn group in 2013.  Andy Gaa and Kate Eckert will be their  chaperones.  They’ll end their stay together with their German peers with a trip to Munich,  the capital of Bavaria.

Both BSC and DAFK are happy that the three month youth exchange will be continued this  summer.  From August 13th  Devyn Joellenbeck and her family will host Johanna Traub;  Madelyn Wagner and her family will have Daniela Koch as their guest.  They’ll attend Belle- ville West High School.  DAFK is  extending the thanks to everybody involved in this wonder- ful project, especially to the host families, the school and to BSC and the chairwoman of the  youth committee Doris Roach.  Doris had a chance to meet with both girls in Paderborn on a  visit to Europe in April.  DAFK had a special “stammtisch” for her and her husband John.   By the way, DAFK regularly offers a special “stammtisch” when we have guests from Belle- ville and around.  So we are looking forward to the next special “stammtisch” for Marilyn and  Judith Schulte, BSC members living in St. Louis, in June.

DAFK is proud to send an official delegation of 11 persons to Belleville attending the ceremo- nies of this year’s Oktoberfest.  The group will be led by President Heiner Sprenkamp and  Vice-President Wolfgang Stueken.  Three other members of the board will also come:  Erwin  Schlenger, Uta Hoischen and Alois Lienen.  Dr. Gabi Sprenkamp, Marita Lienen, John and  Gertrud Greaves and Manfred Joachim will complete the group.  All of them are looking for- ward to these great days of Belleville’s 200th birthday.  Many thanks to BSC, President  Larry Pearson and everybody involved.
